SEATTLE -- International travelers flying Alaska Airlines can skip one check-in step at the airport by using a new app to have their passport verified. Starting Tuesday, the airline's Mobile Verify app lets guests with U.S. or Canadian passports create a digital identity and verify their documents virtually.
The FAA says two Alaska Airlines flights to Hawaii scraped the runway at Sea-Tac on Jan. 26 during takeoff, and the planes were grounded for a short time. Tail strikes happen occasionally, but two in a row are not normal. And while the pilots on those two Boeing 737 MAX 9s weren't in any danger, the incidents highlight that the U.S. aviation system's stellar safety record can't be taken for granted, and pilots need to be more careful when checking automated data.
In the case of the two Hawaii-bound flights, a bug in an Alaska software program sent bad takeoff weight data to crews. It was enough to skew the jets' thrust and speed settings, so the planes headed down the runway with less power than they should have.
The problem was fixed within 22 minutes, and Alaska resumed normal flying. But the incident highlights that mistakes can happen, and airlines need to be more vigilant about verifying automated data that's based on publicly available information. The FAA has been looking into the incident. It isn't clear what caused it. The airline also hasn't said whether the two flight attendants who were fired for commenting online about the Equality Act's support have been rehired.
